Former Indian Land student opens bakery in Uptown Charlotte

The 7th Street Public Market is an open space with vendors, or sometimes labeled as an “urban food destination” located in Uptown Charlotte. After baking in Charlotte for a few years, Cara decided to explore her own options. The original business vision was a food truck, but more of a tiny house on the back of a flatbed trailer. After she realized it was more of a glorified pop-up, (with no kitchen), she decided it was a better business decision to open a counter-service bakery. When the opportunity presented itself, she opened The Gâteau Baking Company.

The Gâteau Baking Company offers baked goods that cater to all types of diets. They truly embrace the entire local movement. She branded the bakery as “allergy-friendly”, but they also offer vegan, gluten friendly, sugar free & dairy free treats. Each baked good is artfully designed with beautiful colors or icing, and will please both your eyes and appetite. The #1 seller is cookies, but they also sell tons of donuts, pop tarts, cinnamon rolls, and cupcakes. She also sells ice-cream from a local creamery, called the Golden Cow Creamery.

The countertops, which were also sourced locally, were made from a red oak tree which died from canker worms, but later converted into raw slabs. Even the tree had a story: born here, died here, and reborn. Cara’s belief system is based on valuing local products. Offering goods that are hand-crafted. Shopping small. Keeping money in the same place.
There is nothing better than picking up a little something for yourself and knowing your purchase is going to help someone else. The Gâteau Baking Company donates to various organizations in the community, that support women. The Gâteau Baking Company also donates to a scholarship at UNCC called “The Katherine Memory Jones Endowment for the Arts”, dedicated to Ketie Jones, a dear friend that was shot & killed in Plaza Midwood in 2016.
This place is certainly worth a visit but you best get there before they sell out!
